Parting Moon Shots from NASA's GRAIL Mission:







Three days prior to its planned impact on a lunar mountain, mission controllers activated the camera aboard one of NASA's GRAIL twins to take some final photos from lunar orbit.

GRAIL-A arrived successfully in lunar orbit, New Years Eve.
GRAIL-B is thirty hours behind, scheduled to arrive for the
tandem high-precision lunar gravity mapping mission on
the first day of 2012, when the United States will have five
spacecraft in orbit around the Moon for the first time [NASA].

Am 10. September startete eine Delta-II Rakete mit den beiden Zwillingssonden GRAIL-A und –B an Bord in Richtung Mond.

The Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory mission will create the most accurate gravitational map of the moon to date.

Nach zweitägiger Verspätung wie vorgesehen, verlief nun alles reibungslos und perfekt auch das Wetter spielte jetzt mit!
